NCAT specialist Ann Baier is organizing a bilingual (English and Spanish) Market Linking Workshop that will expand on the marketing and promotional materials workshop held earlier this year. In January Ann and NCAT specialist Marisa Alcorta spoke to farmers about developing promotional materials for their farms, and strategies for utilizing free advertising to market their products to potential buyers. Since January, some beginning farmers in the Salinas area have been working with ALBA (Agricultural Land-Based Training Program) to develop business plans, flyers and brochures, and product availability lists in preparation to meet buyers on Feb 20th. NCAT has worked to recruit several buyers in the region to participate in the upcoming Market Linking workshop, in order to build relationships with underserved local growers and potentially establish business relationships. Both of these workshops are supported by a USDA NIFA Beginning Farmers and Rancher Development Program (BFRDP) grant co-written by NCAT and UC Berkeley. This project aims to help immigrant and minority beginning farmers learn more about sustainable production techniques, marketing and business planning, as well as link them to new market opportunities.
