Energy Engineer

The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is seeking an energy auditor/engineer to perform in-depth energy audits throughout rural communities in Montana. NCAT is a private non-profit organization whose work includes nationally recognized projects in energy, agriculture, and food. NCAT’s programs include ATTRA, the national sustainable agriculture information service, and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program Clearinghouse (LIHEAP).

Would you like to work with commercial buildings, and agricultural energy systems to develop energy conservation projects for their HVAC, building envelope, motors, pumps, and blowers, and lighting? This regular, full-time position provides an excellent opportunity to work with a dedicated and professional staff to develop energy conservation projects throughout the state. The position will be based at NCAT’s headquarters in Butte, Montana but, for the right person, remote work with travel to the Butte office on a regular basis is possible. NCAT is a private non-profit organization that works to foster and promote sustainable technologies and systems, especially for the benefit of economically disadvantaged individuals and communities. Applicants must be willing to travel.

Minimum requirements include basic engineering skills and experience with building systems and energy conservation. A degree in mechanical engineering, building science, or a related field with energy auditing experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
The successful candidate will have a strong interest in energy conservation and be able to perform in-depth energy audits and create technical audit reports for health care and commercial facilities. A demonstrated interest and knowledge in promoting energy efficiency is required. Experience in energy use and conservation modeling is desired. A background in field energy assessments, including work with HVAC, building envelope, control systems, electrical systems, lighting, motors, pumps, and blowers is desirable. Excellent technical writing and communication skills as well as the ability to learn quickly are very important in this position. A high level of computer literacy is required including use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Travel is required.


  • Conducts in-depth commercial energy audits throughout Montana;
  • Performs base case and conservation energy analysis;
  • Writes extensive technical reports based on audit and analysis;
  • Facilitates incentives and rebates from utilities;
  • Researches technical information on energy efficiency and sustainable building technology;
  • Provides technical assistance to building owners, engineers, architects, contractors, and property management officials;
  • Prepares and edits written reports, presentations, and website materials for audiences with varying degrees of technical knowledge;
  • Communicates via email, telephone, and in person to gather and disseminate energy efficiency information;
  • Recommends engineering modifications to increase energy performance.

Salary and Benefits:
$40,000 – $55,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include paid vacation and holidays, health, life and disability insurance, a cafeteria and 401(k) plan and a pleasant, professional office environment.
