Kathy Hadley
Executive Director - Montana

Kathleen Hadley was named Executive Director of the National Center for Appropriate Technology in July 1997. Prior to that she served as associate director and development director for NCAT. She has more than 18 years of management experience with project, program and corporate responsibilities, including personnel, resource center, and computer services areas. Previously she was a business owner and partner in an energy and environmental consulting firm and worked for the Montana State Energy Office. In 1997 she was appointed to the Governor's Electric Utility Industry Restructuring Advisory Committee for the state of Montana. She has a BS in Biology and MS in Biology from State University College at Buffalo. |
Marcia Brown
Chief Operating Officer - Montana

Marcia Brown came to NCAT in 1998 after a long career working for Montana members of Congress both in Washington, D.C. and in Montana. At NCAT, Marcia has developed expertise in Human Resource management while also providing oversight of NCAT's Information Technology Division, Resource Centers, Administrative Services, and property management. With employees in multiple locations across the country, Marcia has used her knowledge of federal law to develop policies and procedures that ensure compliance with state and federal labor laws. She has developed a new internal pay plan, increased the depth and breadth of benefits available to employees, and established strong payroll processing capabilities. She has also developed long-term recruitment and hiring practices that have increased the diversity of the organization. Marcia's strength is designing policies and procedures that protect employees as well as organizations. Marcia is a member of the National Society for Human Resource Management and the Continental Divide Chapter of the Montana State Society for Human Resource Management. A Montana native, she attended the University of Montana majoring in political science and retains a strong interest in government and public policy. |
Marisa Alcorta

Marisa Alcorta has been a Sustainable Agriculture Specialist with NCAT since 2008. As part of her work at NCAT's California office, Marisa provides Spanish-speaking farmers information about marketing, business planning, and organic and sustainable production. She coordinates efforts to reach out to underserved farmers to take advantage of NCAT and ATTRA's free services. She brings expertise on grapes, marketing, soil management, and beginning farmer resources to NCAT. Marisa received her Master's degree in Horticulture & Agronomy at the University of California Davis, where she studied viticulture. She has worked on small organic farms, and her past work in the nonprofit sector involved coordinating growers into a marketing cooperative, and helping launch a successful downtown farmers' market in her hometown of Austin, Texas. Marisa received her B.S. in Plant Science from Cornell University, where she studied sustainable agriculture and international development. |
Guy King Ames
Horticulture Specialist - Arkansas

Here at NCAT, Guy provides farmers, especially fruit growers, with the best information available to empower them to be the most environmentally-sound growers they can be while maintaining a sustainable income. He has a B.A. in History and English and an M.S. in Horticulture. In the past Guy has been a professional nursery man and orchardist, as well as a technical writer in the area of sustainable fruit production. In addition, he was a public school English teacher for ten years. |
Sandra Anderson
Energy Engineer - Montana

Ms. Anderson earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Montana State University, graduating with honors in 1991. She has been a registered professional engineer since 1998. After working 13 years for Montana Power/NorthWestern Energy, she moved on to the medical imaging and real estate fields, before joining NCAT in May of 2006. Her current responsibilities are to help businesses implement energy efficiency measures under the auspices of the E+ Business Partners Electric Conservation Program. |

Ann Baier

Ann Baier is a UC Davis graduate with an MS in International Agriculture Development and Agronomy, who has experience in providing training and education to minority and limited resource farmers. She is an inspector for the California Certified Organic Farmers and was the Executive Director of Roots and Wings, a non-profit that provides farm- and garden-based education and training programs to young people. |
Stacie Barry
Operations Director, Energy Services - Montana

Stacie came to NCAT after working as the project manager for the Mine Waste Technology Program at Montana Tech and as an environmental historian at Heritage Research Center. She also works as an environmental health specialist with the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department. Stacie holds a doctorate in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Montana and her bachelor and master’s degrees are in environmental engineering, with an emphasis in mine waste. Her dissertation research integrated environmental science, public health, environmental history, literature, technical communications, and anthropology. Her dissertation topic was the environment, health, and culture of the Butte Superfund site. In addition to being a master gardener with the Montana State University Extension program, Stacie is inordinately fond of literature, and deeply enjoys exploring the Montana wilderness. |
Jeff Birkby
Manager, Smart Growth Network Website - Montana

Jeff Birkby has been involved in behavioral change and sustainability issues for the past 30 years. Jeff has managed a variety of programs for NCAT, including the NATAS energy clearinghouse, ATTRA sustainable agriculture website and publications, ATTRA outreach, DOE energy market research programs, and DOE sustainable communities programs. Jeff currently manages the EPA-funded Smart Growth Network website (www.smartgrowth.org). His education includes a bachelor's degree in biology, a master's degree in botany, and energy and sustainability studies at the University of Oslo, Norway. |
Sandra Booth

Sandra Booth has more than 30 years of development experience in non-profit organizations. Prior to joining NCAT, Sandra worked as the Vice President for The Ophelia Project. She has also done work for Easter Seals, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Glenwood School for Boys. Sandra holds a BA in History from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Sandra joined NCAT in September 2009 and is working to promote NCAT to a variety of audiences, raising awareness of our programs and our needs, as well as raising private funds to support NCAT's efforts. |

Linda Coffey
Program Specialist - Arkansas

Linda Coffey comes from a family farm in central Missouri, where they raised cattle, hogs, sheep and horses. She majored in animal science at the University of Missouri and enjoyed an internship at the United States Sheep Experiment Station near Dubois, Idaho; later completing a masters in animal science. Linda joined NCAT in August 2000, working primarily with the ATTRA project on sheep, goat, and multispecies grazing issues. |
Brian Coldiron
Accountant - Montana

Brian Coldiron has joined our Butte office in the Accounting department. As an accountant, his duties will include accounts payable, vouchering, and data input into our Jamis financial software. Brian has a bachelor's degree in business and information technology from Montana Tech of the University of Montana and was employed with the Public Defenders of Montana before joining our team. In his free time, he is a bowler, averaging 200 a game. He and his wife also enjoy the outdoors, and hike, fish, mountain bike and prospect for gold. They have two children and two grandchildren.

Norman Conrad
Northeast Regional Office Director - Pennsylvania

Norm provides leadership to the Northeast office unit and outreach on sustainable agriculture and community issues. Norm develops and fosters relationships to small producers and sustainable agriculture organizations. Norm has over 35 years experience in agriculture working as an extension educator and lab director. He has a MS from West Virginia University in Plant Pathology and has led numerous environmental programs including drinking and ground water education. He has helped with implementation and training of the first state manure regulations. Norm is well known for his agronomic and IPM education and training programs. He has also served in the military in reserve and guard units. |
Sarah Crain

Sarah is a 2011 graduate of Montana Tech where she earned a degree in Occupational Safety and Health. She is an energy services team specialist assisting with a broad range of energy efficiency and conservation projects. Prior to joining NCAT, Sarah worked with the State of Montana Safety Bureau and Envirocon. In her off-time, she enjoys spending time in the outdoors, traveling, and relaxing with her friends and family. |

Dave Daugherty

After a stint in the Air Force working as a radar repairman and operator, Dave attended MSU and graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Dave worked for The Montana Power Company as a Distribution Engineer, Communications Engineer, and later as an Energy Services Department Engineer. His last job was working as a field rep on Energy Star programs administered by NEEA. His interests include flying (private pilot), SCUBA diving, camping and other outdoor activities. Dave's work at NCAT is focused mainly on energy conservation projects for NorthWestern Energy. |

Rex Dufour

Rex Dufour's background is in entomology and integrated pest management. His work experience includes managing sustainable development projects in Thailand and Laos. Mr. Dufour has worked as both project manager and program specialist for NCAT and heads NCAT's California office. In addition to the ATTRA project, he is involved in several minority farmer outreach projects. |

Margo Hale

Margo Hale grew up in Northwest Arkansas and comes from a dairy cattle background. She was very involved in 4-H and raised Holstein cattle. She received a BS in Animal Science and is currently finishing her Master's in Agricultural and Extension Education, both at the University of Arkansas. Margo joined NCAT in December 2003 as an Animal Science Intern, working mainly with small ruminants. |

Holly Hill

A native Montanan, Holly Hill grew up on a cattle ranch in the Deer Lodge Valley. She holds a BA from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and joined NCAT in October of 2006. She has served as the Program Director for the National Energy Corps AmeriCorps Program working to inform and motivate individuals and communities to take action for clean local energy, energy efficiency and climate change mitigation. |
Tammy Hinman

Tammy is a native Coloradoan who came to Butte, Montana, via a long stint of farming and sustainable agriculture work in New York State and Arizona. Her Bachelors degree from Colorado State University in Horticulture Food Crops and Entomology set her on her path in agriculture. After finishing her Master's degree in Food System studies from Antioch University, she worked at Cornell University Cooperative Extension as a communications specialist in the area of sustainable agriculture and small farms. She has also worked with the Northeast Organic Farming Association and the Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty on organic certification under the National Organic Program and regional food identity campaigns. At NCAT, Tammy will be drawing from her expertise to provide information and develop resources for farmers and people working with farmers through the ATTRA 1-800 line, publications, and other horticultural- related projects. |
Dale Horton

As an architect and energy consultant, Dale Horton's experience has focused on integrating architecture and energy engineering to develop solutions that improve energy efficiency, comfort, and productivity in residential and commercial facilities. He joined NCAT in 1998 after 13 years as owner of a small consulting firm offering architecture, energy, and utility management services. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and a Master of Science Degree in
Environmental Studies from the University of Montana. He currently manages a range of renewable energy and energy conservation projects relating to residences, multi-family housing, businesses, and agriculture. |
Dave Houser
Energy Specialist - Montana

Mr. Houser earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Science from Montana State University in 1981. He then started working for the Montana Power Company (MPC) as a construction and startup engineer on the twin 750 MW coal-fired power plants in Colstrip, MT. During his 23 year history with MPC and NorthWestern Energy, Mr. Houser managed energy conservation program design and implementation activities, market analysis and planning functions, resource planning analysis and modeling, and customer service and satisfaction efforts. Mr. Houser testified in numerous regulatory and legislative hearings on conservation and resource planning issues, and was one of MPC's representatives on its least-cost resource planning advisory committee for about ten years. After Dave left the utility in early 2005, he started Houser Consulting Services and has worked as an independent consultant for two years. Dave has been a licensed professional mechanical engineer in Montana since 1986. He was also the first Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance in 1996-97. |

Hal Hubber earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Art & Design from Western Montana College in 1978, and later received his professional Interior Design license At Boise State University. He worked in the Architectural arena as a facilities planner and Director of Planning & Construction for the Montana Power Co. for over 20 years and later 3 years as the Facilities Manager at Touch America. Kay Joslin has worked for NCAT since 1988 and has managed the LIHEAP Clearinghouse since 1990. Prior to that she was an information specialist for NCAT's National Appropriate Technology Assistance Service. Since 1995 she has been a member of the board of directors of the National Low-Income Energy (NLIEC), helping to coordinate workshops and information materials for NLIEC's annual low-income energy conference. She has a BA in journalism from the University of Montana and over 20 years of experience in all aspects of information dissemination, publications production, writing, editing, research, and public relations. |

Jody Krzan joined NCAT in 1987. Ms. Krzan has extensive experience in the area of office support services. Her responsibilities include providing organizational, administrative and clerical support to the Executive Director and other senior management staff. Chris grew up on a small farm in Pennsylvania. After graduating from Susquehanna University with a degree in Business Administration, he started and operated a certified organic, diversified vegetable farm for ten years. Before his move to NCAT, Chris worked for a central PA based energy company learning energy auditing and weatherization, along with solar design and installation. Chris and his wife enjoy living in northeastern PA in their self-built, solar powered, straw bale home.

Hannah comes to NCAT from the North Center Regional Center for Rural Development where she was responsible for coordinating professional development programs to build capacity in ag organizations to engage Latino communities in sustainable local food systems. She also worked to enroll beginning farmers in training and incubation programs and developed local food systems in two Iowa communities. She has a MS in Sustainable Ag and Sociology. |
Carl Little

Carl's work at NCAT focuses on sustainable agriculture and helping revitalize rural communities. He grew up on a large grain farm in Indiana and later raised dairy goats, Dexter cattle and pastured poultry on his own farm. Before joining NCAT, Carl was chief of staff for Indiana Congressman John Hostettler, a state trooper and a county prosecuting attorney in southwest Indiana. He has a B.S. from Indiana State University and a J.D. from Regent University. |
Brittany Lynch

Brittany works with NorthWestern Energy's E+ Program looking to qualify commercial and industrial buildings for energy saving rebates. She received a B.S. in Architecture from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. Her undergraduate work included a research internship with RPI's center for Architecture Science and Ecology focusing on next-generation building systems geared towards revolutionary building design practices in sustainability. |

David Lynch is an Energy Analyst with our Energy Services team. David holds a Bachelors of Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and has studied at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. David held intern design positions with Oficinaa in New York City and D'Agostino Izzo Quirk Architects in Somerville, MA before moving to Butte. He has hands-on experience in ecological and climate analysis and 3D modeling and design. David is also a musician, and served as the symphonic bassist for the Rensselaer Symphony Orchestra. |

Robert Maggiani

Robert has a BBA and MS in Statistics, Accounting and Political Science from the University of Texas in Austin. He has a wealth of experience in agriculture from founding a farmworker cooperative in south Texas to serving as the Chief Marketing Specialist for the Texas Department of Agriculture. Robert has great experience with organic crop standards and certification as well as assisting farmers in developing new markets. He also speaks Spanish and has relationships with producers, organizations, retailers, and other groups involved in Texas agriculture. |

Prior to joining NCAT, Travis spent 13 years working for the Montana Human Rights Network. As the organization's Research Director and Executive Director, Travis was a nationally-recognized expert on anti-democratic movements, and media outlets across the country featured my analysis. In addition to writing and research, Travis has extensive experience in public-policy advocacy, community organizing, and public relations. He has bachelor degrees in print journalism and sociology from the University of Montana. |
Crissie McMullan

As an agriculture specialist for NCAT, Crissie McMullan leads the Grow Montana project—a broad-based coalition promoting a Montana-based food system. As part of Grow Montana, Crissie founded the nation's first "FoodCorps," a team of full-time VISTA volunteers dedicated to farm to cafeteria programs across the state. In 2003, Crissie co-founded the Farm to College Program at The University of Montana, where she also earned an MS in Environmental Studies. Crissie has served on the boards of a local community-gardening organization and a food policy council, and is a 2009 Kinship Conservation Fellow. |

Kaleena is a former Energy Corps member, having served a term with the city of Butte and a half time position with NCAT the previous program year. |
Nancy Moore

Mike Morris

Mike Morris's work at NCAT has focused on promoting more sustainable ways of using energy and water in agriculture and the food system. He is especially interested in irrigation, solar energy, and biofuels. Mike's recent projects have included "Energy Training for Agriculture Professionals," "Building Farm Energy Self-Sufficiency," "The Efficiency Plus Irrigation Pilot Project," and "Bringing New Farmers to the Table." Before joining NCAT in 1999 Mike earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh and spent 10 years teaching at colleges and universities in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. He currently serves as director of NCAT's Southwest Regional Office, in San Antonio, Texas. |
Tracy Mumma

Tracy Mumma joined NCAT in 1999. She has written, lectured and taught about reducing the environmental impact of construction, and holds an MS degree in Environmental Studies. She lives on a small farm powered by draft horses. Ms. Mumma administers content for the NCAT website and the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service website, and aids in editing NCAT's sustainable agriculture publications. |
Rich Myers

Richard Myers joined NCAT in 2010 as editor of the Publications Production Team. He provides editorial review for ATTRA and other NCAT publications. Myers holds a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from Montana State University and a master's degree in Rhetoric (teaching writing) from Eastern Washington University. He has worked as a reporter and editor in Montana newspapers for more than 20 years and has been an adjunct writing instructor at Carroll College in Helena for nearly that long. Myers is also a musician who has sung in symphony chorales and bluegrass bands and plays guitar and a mean clawhammer banjo. |

Douglas Porter is our energy services marketing representative for the Billings, MT area. Doug has 20 years experience marketing process control equipment for a variety of companies across the Northwest. His work has focused on assisting industrial and commercial clients to exercise more control over manufacturing processes in order to reduce waste, decrease raw material needs and increase safety. Doug is a fly fishing aficionado, and says he ties his own flies and also builds his own fly rods. When he isn't traipsing through streams in search of fish, he enjoys a good book. |

Stephanie was born and raised in Michigan before moving to Washington D.C., where she attended American University and later worked for environmental non-profits on education, outreach and fundraising. Stephanie attended the University of Montana for graduate school, studying Environmental Studies with a focus on sustainable food systems. Stephanie has enjoyed her past experiences working for organizations such as Earth Share, The Student Conservation Association, Garden City Harvest and the University of Montana Forum for Living with Appropriate Technology, and she is excited to be joining the NCAT team! |

Andy has been with NCAT since 2007 as a Sustainable Agriculture Specialist, working in the fields of organic crop production, season extension, local foods, urban agriculture, and farm energy. Andy has a MS degree in Sustainable Systems from Slippery Rock University and has a background in small-scale intensive production systems, including Permaculture design, Grow-Biointensive, and SPIN-Farming. He has extensive experience in market farming and has worked on and managed diversified farms in Ohio, Vermont, Colorado, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. |

Jeff Schahczenski

Jeff Schahczenski has expertise in organic and sustainable agriculture public policy, marketing and economics, transgenics in agriculture, organic horticulture, renewable ag energy, cooperative development, sustainable building, intercultural communications and beekeeping. He is also Executive Director of both the Big Hole River Foundation and Western Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (WSAWG). He has worked with the Alternative Energy Resources Organization (AERO) on regional sustainable agriculture projects, is an adjunct instructor for Western Montana College and Montana Tech, and serves on several non-profit boards and is building his own straw bale house and greenhouse. Before moving to Montana, Jeff worked for Rutgers University, started one of the first CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farms in New Jersey, received graduate degrees in agricultural economics and political science, served in the Peace Corps in Belize, Central America, and worked on his grandfather's dairy farm in Wisconsin. |
Dave Scott

Dave graduated from Washington State University with a B.S. in Animal Science, Dairy Production. With his wife, he owned and operated a fifty cow dairy for twenty-one years, milking Guernsey and Jersey cows. The last ten years have found him running a sheep enterprise, consisting of 230 ewes on thirty acres of intensely grazed pasture. His duties at NCAT include helping small livestock producers meet their production and marketing goals through oral presentations and written publications. |

A member of the NCAT staff for over 14 years, Mary Anne Skuletich has extensive knowledge of computer hardware, software and networking topology and protocols; including DOS, Novell, Xenix, Windows, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. Ms. Skuletich has held the position of NCAT's Network Administrator for the past eight years, encompassing technical support, configuration implementation and management, network monitoring, LAN hardware and applications, performance analysis, investigating and recommending solutions for enhancing reliability and future growth needs. She administers all E-mail, RAS Systems, TCP/IP and Dialup networking, telecommunications, and end-user support and training as well as database design and multimedia presentations. |

Karen van Epen edits ATTRAnews and other publications for ATTRA. For more than 25 years, Karen has been providing information to help farmers improve their practices. She was a partner in agAccess, a bookstore and publishing company that specialized in sustainable agriculture. For the Community Alliance with Family Farmers, she edited Farmer to Farmer, the Agrarian Advocate, and numerous other publications. In the 1970s Karen was a partner in Odyssey Orchards, one of California's first organic farms, a catalyst in the formation of California Certified Organic Farmers. She was one of the founders of the Farallones Institute — now the Occidental Arts amd Ecology Center — pioneering environmental education that combines organic farming, appropriate technology, green building, and sustainable communities. |

Sheri Vincent joined our Energy Services team in February 2011 as our Marketing Representative. Sheri will focus on promoting our services to commercial and industrial energy users in Montana. "Seek, land and follow-through on any energy savings projects" is how she describes her job duties. She started her career as an electrician in the uranium mines at Kerr Mcgee in Grants, NM and has 30 years experience in the electrical systems industry in industrial, commercial and residential applications. When she has time off, Sheri likes to camp and white-water raft. |

Sheryl Vogel came to NCAT in 1997 after working for the Mine Waste Technology Program at Montana Tech of the University of Montana where she developed a center for electronic research of mine waste information at Montana Tech Library. Prior to that she was project coordinator of a 4-year ecophysiology project at the University of Florida. She manages NCAT's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Clearinghouse databases and maintains the LIHEAP Clearinghouse web site. Ms. Vogel holds a BA in Botany and a MS in
