Energy Analysts
The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is seeking two engineers to perform field energy assessments. One position will work primarily in the commercial arena and the other primarily in the residential arena. These are regular, full-time, entry-level positions providing an excellent opportunity to work with a dedicated and professional staff on state and national projects while developing skills as an energy analyst. QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum requirements include basic engineering skills and experience with energy systems. A college degree is required. A degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering, or a related field is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
The successful candidates will have a strong interest in building technologies and learning how to perform commercial and industrial or residential energy assessments. A demonstrated interest and knowledge in promoting energy efficiency is required. Experience in energy systems, computer spreadsheets, computer energy performance simulation is desired. A background in contracts, construction, working with commercial or residential customers would also be desirable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to learn quickly are very important in this position. A high level of computer literacy is required including use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Travel is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts building and residential energy assessments
- Performs energy analysis with energy performance software
- Reviews engineering reports; researches technical information on energy efficiency and sustainable building technology topics
- Provides technical assistance in person and over the telephone to builders, building contractors, and property management officials on energy efficient building practices
- Prepares and edits written descriptions, topical summaries, bibliographies, and other information materials suitable for giving presentations and posting to websites while targeting a variety of audiences of varying degrees of technical knowledge
- Communicates via email, telephone, and in person to gather and disseminate information
- Recommends engineering and product modifications to increase energy performance
- May attend workshops, seminars, and related events in support of project duties
SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Agronomy/Cropping Systems Specialist

Minimum requirements include farm-based experience with a background in agronomy, soil fertility, weed ecology, crop rotations, economics or a related field in agriculture. A BS or MS degree or equivalent in one of these fields is also required.

Horticulture/Marketing Specialist - Louisiana

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work to build the capacity of farmers, farm organizations, farmers markets, and other partners to regenerate and develop new parts of the regional food system in disaster-affected Gulf States, increasing producers' capacity to diversify crops as one approach to better management of risks posed by future weather-related challenges.
- Work to leverage resources through networking and coordinating activities for the shared goal of developing and diversifying producers' crops and markets in the region. Increase producers' awareness of successful farmer's markets and provide information about successful approaches elsewhere. Increase number of producers who are vendors for various direct markets, including but not limited to farmers markets. Increase the diversity of avenues for direct marketing and improve the skills of farmers to meet the needs of those new avenues.
- Increase peer-to-peer learning opportunities among farmers. Provide increased opportunities for consumer education and consumer involvement in new and renewed markets.
- Ensure that communication with local leaders and policy makers occurs so that market opportunities for family farmers remain a priority in planning for redevelopment. Work to link local food system efforts in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.
- Work directly with farmers and farm groups to provide technical information on the sustainable production and marketing of vegetable and fruit crops and forages. Provide information and support to farmers transitioning to organic production
- Write publications, topical summaries, bibliographies, workshop materials and website information on a variety of horticulture and agronomy topics while targeting a variety of audiences with varying degrees of technical expertise or knowledge

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum requirements are an equivalency of a BA or BS degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and one to three years of strong web development experience utilizing PHP and MySQL. This position requires excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills, organizational skills and the ability to work independently or in a team environment, often with staff in remote offices. Understanding of Section 508 compliance issues and solutions would be beneficial.
Specific qualifications include knowledge of PHP, MySQL, XHTML and javascript, as well as knowledge and interest in open source technologies. This position requires conceptual understanding of dynamic web page development and maintenance, including javascript, CSS and XHTML, as well as experience in web server interface protocols and procedures on Unix and Windows platforms. NCAT offers internship experiences for upper-level college and graduate students at many of its offices. Internships may take place during the school year or during the summer. Interns work alongside NCAT staff members, strengthening their skills by working with professionals in fields such as computer science, agricultural sciences, accounting, and energy efficiency.

- The intern will work with an NCAT supervisor and program specialists to research sustainable agriculture, local food systems, and farm energy for development of technical publications.
- The intern will gain hands-on experience working with local urban farmers to produce profitable, locally grown vegetables for marketing to a local institution.
- The intern may work on website information for national distribution.
- NCAT will work with the intern to develop a work plan that will meet their needs for gaining work experience and academic credit if needed.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have good communication skills, an interest or background in agriculture and local food systems, an active and curious mind, and a high level of computer skills. Website development skills are preferred. A high school diploma is required. On-farm experience would be useful but is not required. Applicants with background in farming who are not currently enrolled in school may also be considered.
Compensation:
$8.50 to $10.50 per hour depending on experience.
