Consider:
Is it possible to renovate the interior
of an existing building to meet project objectives?
Is there a source of used material for wall framing? The most likely components for reuse
are timber frames or wood beams, although these must be regraded for structural reuse.
Steel framing may also be reused. Remember to watch for local sources. If the reused
material comes from further away than comparable new material, environmental benefit can
be reduced or negated.
Is the stability of reused wood framing an advantage in this project? Does it justify a
higher cost?
Can the aesthetic of aged framing materials be an advantage in project design?
How can the wall system be designed to promote the reuse of its components at the end of
this building's lifetime? Consider strategies such as a panel or module design, removable
fasteners, and gaskets rather than adhesive sealants.
