Foundations Example: Thin-wall Foundation

The thin-wall foundation incorporates a poured-in-place concrete foundation wall that is 6" thick, rather than the standard 8". This system is based on engineering to prove that the strength of the thinner concrete wall meets the needs of the structure. The thinner concrete wall is complemented by at least 2" of insulation, to improve the energy performance of the foundation without diminishing usable living space on the lower level. The thin-wall foundation is particularly applicable in projects that include finished basements.

Bottom line:

Thin Wall is a foundation option that offers Reduced Material Use. When the concrete is made with fly ash, the system contains Recycled Material. Because it provides space for insulation that improves the thermal performance of the concrete foundation, the system can be Climate Appropriate.
