Laminated Bamboo
Over the past few years, laminated bamboo has emerged as a flooring material option.
Laminated in two- or three-ply horizontal laminations, or vertical laminations, bamboo
offers a durable and attractive finish flooring. The bamboo flooring is quite dimensionally
stable, and as hard as red oak. It is usually available in either a natural color or a
darker brown, "carmelized" color. Most manufacturers offer either pre-finished
or unfinished flooring.
Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource, and the stems can be harvested repeatedly from the
same plant. There are many different species of bamboo, several of which are used in
construction. The bamboos that are used in the manufacture of flooring are claimed to be
renewable within 39 years.
The bamboo flooring currently available in the United States from a variety of
manufacturers and distributors is an imported product.
Bottom line:
Bamboo flooring is made from a relatively rapidly renewable resource, although the
conditions under which the bamboo is grown and harvested are not always readily apparent
since the product originates abroad.
