Become a FoodCorps Member In Iowa

Posted on: February 2nd, 2012

Food Corps LogoHere’s your chance to promote healthy, local foods in our schools: FoodCorps is seeking talented leaders for a year of public service building healthy school-food environments in high-obesity, limited-resource communities. As the national FoodCorps program’s host site for the state of Iowa, we are looking for individuals who want to teach children about food and nutrition, grow healthy food in school gardens, and connect farms and schools.

In Iowa, we are working with the school district in Des Moines to build farm-to-cafeteria programs and are partnering with the Department of Environmental Studies at Luther College in Decorah to coordinate farm-to-school projects in that rural area. Members are helping to train staff on safe handling of locally grown fresh produce, working to improve the process of obtaining local foods, coordinating efforts to create or expand school gardens, and providing nutrition, food, and agriculture education in the classrooms.

In the coming year, we plan to add additional service sites, including the Center for Energy and Environmental Education in Waterloo, Iowa.

The national FoodCorps program also has host sites in nine other states, with members performing a variety of hands-on service to promote healthy foods and combat childhood obesity.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. For more information about service and to access the application form, visit the FoodCorps website: http://foodcorps.org/become-a-service-member.
