NCAT History

NCAT was founded in 1976. At our inception, we were involved with researching, developing, and implementing small-scale technologies that would directly address the energy needs of the poor.  The energy crisis was in full swing at this time, and our staff focused on helping low-income communities find better, less expensive ways to meet their energy needs using available skills and local resources.  NCAT conducted hands-on workshops and training sessions for community action leaders and low-income people, and published more than 100 technical and consumer publications to help increase the use of appropriate energy technologies, and funded some 370 appropriate technology demonstration projects across the country.

Over time, our work led to a natural expansion that enlarged our focus to address issues related to housing, food production, transportation, sustainable community development, and economic development. As a result, our projects have allowed NCAT a larger arena in which to carry out our mission to assist people, particularly the economically disadvantaged, in becoming more self-reliant, while at the same time protecting our natural resources.

We continue to strengthen our commitment to research, demonstrate, and transfer appropriate technologies to individuals, communities, and organizations.  We take special pride in out work and its positive impact on so many Americans.

Mission Statement:

"To champion sustainable technologies and community-based
approaches that protect natural resources and assist people, especially
the economically disadvantaged, in becoming more self-reliant."
